Q: How did you get into Graphic Design?
I've consistently been interested in the creative world in my education - from painting to knitting. And college was the moment I started questioning how I could stay in that creative world and still make a stable income.
University gave me insight into the type of designer I wanted to be. I am fascinated by the psychology behind the design, and how it can influence behaviour and positive change in society. Most of my independent projects focus on mental health or the community, and working with Plastic Free Falmouth & Swopz Shop gave me a glimpse into how Graphic Design is used in the non-profit sector.
Q: How did you get into the marketing world?
Falmouth University encouraged 2nd-year students to apply for summer jobs for experience and provided funding to help employers train us. The first internship was in a design agency over the course of 3 weeks, and the second was a marketing internship for the remainder of the summer. Shortly afterward, the marketing internship offered part-time work alongside my 3rd year studies.
Additionally, I noticed digital marketing professionals are in high demand and this presents an opportunity for me to use graphic design skills within different aspects of the role: designing strategies, maintaining brand identity, and delivering visual content across multiple platform
Q: Tell us about your experience?
I've worked part-time in the marketing and design world for 3 years, mainly because most of my work has been during my studies. I've spent most of my career managing and maintaining an online presence (social media, branding, websites, blogs, etc.), and my recent experience working with Oaktree Parks allowed me to expand my skills towards other marketing materials such as posters, signage, and brochures.
Q: What are you hoping to achieve within the year?
I'm pursuing a permanent role as a junior graphic designer or marketing role with design incorporated into it. Most job roles have been contract-based, so it would be nice to not have to think about my next steps towards the end of a contract. The ideal job role will present opportunities to learn and expand my skills - I still have lots to learn about the everchanging marketing & design world.
Hopefully, during my spare time, I will continue unfinished projects and introduce a few of them to the community - projects include the Heat or Eat competition, Designing a Healthier City (Bristol edition), and the Salaryman (mental health project).
Q: What makes you stand out from other candidates?
I have a good relationship with my employers I've been employed by the same employer on separate occasions, and I was able to generate feedback on a business project I was doing. Another employer hired me as a design freelancer because I had already gotten to know the company for years as a bartender.
I have an MA in Graphic Design
The difference between a BA and an MA is more independence in generating and managing projects, and it allowed me to take ownership of my work. My master's also gave me insight into how to communicate concepts across different cultures and communities and awareness of copyright infringement.
